Lincoln’s journalism club for fourth and fifth graders produces the Dolphin Times newspaper. In the fall, the students volunteer for specific positions and work as a team to produce articles about the Lincoln community. In the past, students have interviewed Lincoln’s principal, teachers, parents and fellow students. They have written exposes on kindergarten nap time and messy lockers, restaurant and movie reviews, a food column, an advice column and sports articles. They even have attended collegiate athletics press conferences.
The club’s goal is for the students take ownership of the newspaper while receiving guidance in interviewing, writing, copy-editing and layout. The club promotes working in a team, acting as Lincoln leaders, meeting deadlines, reporting, writing and creating an attractive, inviting product.
The club meets after school on Mondays. The teacher-advisor is Harry Hoynes (Lincoln librarian). The parents who assist the club are Bonnie Schindler, Peter Slevin, Steven Holloway, and Gail Horvath. For more information, please contact Bonnie Schindler firstname.lastname@example.org.
